Mixed fortunes for Kigali shoppers

The prices of most foodstuffs and commodities were stable over the past week in the City of Kigali markets. Irish potatoes (Kinigi type) go for Rwf320 a kilo in most markets across the city and suburbs. However, the price of other Irish potatoes varieties increased by Rwf30 to Rwf290 per kilogramme in Nyabugogo market. The price of onions also went up by Rwf100 to Rwf900 per kilo from Rwf800 in Kimironko and Zinia markets. That of cabbages ranges from Rwf300 to Rwf450, depending on size, while a kilo of carrots is at Rwf500, unchanged from last week. Milk costs between Rwf400 and Rwf500 per litre in most city suburbs. The prices of passion fruits and pineapples were also stable at Rwf1,400 per kilogramme, and mangoes cost Rwf1,400 per kilo. Tomatoes go for Rwf5,000 a basin, while fresh peas are at between Rwf1,300 and Rwf1,400 per kilogramme in Kimironko market. A bunch of bananas (plantains) ranges from Rwf6,000 to Rwf7,500, depending on size and a kilo of sweet potatoes is at Rwf300 in Nyarugenge market, while maize flour ranges from Rwf400 to Rwf600. Sugar ranges from Rwf600 to Rwf800 per kilo in neighbourhood shops and city markets. Bread (weighing 1kg) ranges from Rwf800 to Rwf2,000, depending on the brand, type or size and whether one buys from a supermarket or ordinary shops. A bar of laundry soap goes for 500 in most markets across the city. A bar of soap ranges from Rwf400 to Rwf600, and a five-litre jerry can of vegetable cooking oil is at Rwf6,300.
