Egypt’s El Geish have won the 2016 Men’s African Club Championship after beating Tunisia’s Esperance 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21) in final at Cairo Stadium Complex in Egypt on Friday night. El Geish will represent Africa in the upcoming FIVB Men’s Club Championship later this year. It was the first African title for the Egyptian club in their sixth participation after winning a silver medal in Niger in 2007 and Bronze in Egypt in 2011. Rwandan league champions, Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Education of Kibungo (INATEK) missed the event due to financial problems. Esperance, who were playing in their 9th final, lost the last 2 finals last 4 years. Egyptian side, Smouha claimed the bronze medal after beating Swehly of Libya 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 18-25, and 15-9). Another home side Ahly defeated Espoir (DR Congo) 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, and 25-13) to claim 5th position while Zamalek, also of Egypt, overcame FAP (Cameroon) 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, and 25-22) to finish on the 7th position. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
