Johnny McKinstry’s men were shocked 1-0 in Mauritius as forward Francis Rasolofonirina inspired his side to victory over Rwanda in a Group H clash at the Anjalay Stadium in Belle-Vue. If Amavubi are to make headway, they have to avoid misusing scoring chances like they did in Mauritius. Rwanda got three clear chances through Elias Uzamukunda, Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza and Jean –Claude Iranzi but failed to hit the back of the net. Mauritius relied on counter attacks with striker Kevin Bru leading the onslaught and even hitting the post twice before the break. Midway in the second half, Rasolofonirina netted the goal that separated the two teams. Rwanda need nothing short of the maximum three points from today’s game, if they are to bounce back into contention, hoping to also win the last two matches against Mozambique in June and Ghana away in September. Amavubi captain Haruna Niyonzima remains optimistic they will bounce back and win against Mauritius as the only way to get back into the race to take one of two places available in the group. “If we play with high intensity and purpose, then we shall have a good chance to beat Mauritius. We’re positive we can win and look forward to the next fixture,” Niyonzima told Times Sport on Monday. Mauritius now have six points, four points shy of leaders Ghana, who thrashed Mozambique 3-1 at Accra Sports Stadium before drawing goalless in the return leg on Sunday at Estadio Nacional do Zimpeto in Maputo. Mauritius temporarily climbed to second position, Rwanda dropped to third position with three points in three games and Mozambique are bottom of the table with one point from four matches. In the other games to be played today, neighbours Uganda host Burkina Faso, while Burundi faces Namibia away from home. Ethiopia host Algeria having lost 7-1 in the first leg on Saturday. Morocco, Ghana, Algeria and Senegal have continued to increase their chances of progressing since they lead their groups. ************** Group H Team PD W D L Pts Ghana 4 3 1 0 10Mauritius 3 2 0 1 6Rwanda 3 1 0 2 3Mozambique 4 0 1 3 1 editorial@newtimes.co.rw
