Volleyball: Rayon optimistic to win maiden league title

Rayon Sports Volleyball Club are keen on putting up a strong bid for a historic first national volleyball league title. In an exclusive interview with Times Sport on Tuesday, Head coach Fidele Nyirimana emphasised his team is strong and ready to challenge for the league crown, the only title they have not yet won in Rwanda’s major annual tournaments. Created in late 2013, Rayon Sports who finished as league first runners-up in 2014 and 2015 believe they are now ready. “We have a strong team, a blend of new signings and few who were with us last season. Our major target is challenging for the league title this season and we are capable, players are fired up to execute the mission and the club has promised all possible support,” Nyirimana told this paper on Tuesday. “It’s a tough call; closest archrivals INATEK and APR are also eyeing the title. We should be very resilient, determined and take every single game seriously,” he added. Rayon Sports also known as ‘The Blues’ were supposed to kick-off the quest for league title against Pierre Marshal Kwizera’s Kireke last Saturday in Kirehe but match officials arrived at the venue very late and the game was postponed on yet to be communicated date. On February 28, Nyirimana’s side will take on new entrants IPRC- South hoping to get off to a winning start. Among the new players at the club include Rwanda international Flavien Ndamukunda and setter Herve Kagimbura who signed one year contract each. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
