NORTHERN PROVINCE BURERA — The Rwanda Red Cross, has completed a one-week training of residents in Burera District on sanitation and hygiene. At least 25 volunteers and local authorities from Kagogo Sector were taught about unhygienic related diseases, their effects and symptoms. Joseph Zaraduhaye, the Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs, asked residents to take responsibility of practicing and teaching their children about hygiene and sanitation in order to avoid preventable diseases such as diarrhoea, and respiratory diseases. The residents, who have previously suffered recurring poor hygiene related diseases, were encouraged to always wash their hands with soap in homes and ensuring cleanness of their toilets. The trainers were asked to become supervisors in villages by working with executive secretaries to ensure that the standards of sanitation are maintained. According to the Health Ministry report, 21% of the Rwandan children born every year die due to diarrhoea, and 3.5 million children die worldwide especially in developing countries. Ends
