SOUTHERN PROVINCE HUYE – District Mayors countrywide are seeking to involve students at the National University of Rwanda (NUR) in mobilising residents in districts towards development programmes. The Mayors and the students, under the District University Students Associations Forum, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation to this effect. The pact was signed on Sunday October 26 in Huye district and is aimed at fostering closer cooperation between students hailing from the different districts who are studying at the NUR, with districts’ leaders. François Xavier Habakurama, the President of the Forum, said that students have previously contributed tremendously to the development of their home districts through their district’s associations. “Districts that have cooperated with such associations can attest to the impact university students have had in speeding up development activities in their districts of origin,” said Habakurama. Through their different district associations, NUR students participate in different activities in line with courses they pursue at the university. This avails them the opportunity to serve their communities and practice what is learnt in school. Damas Muhororo, the Mayor of Kayonza District in the Eastern Province, hailed the contribution of NUR students hailing from his district. “They played an active role during the launch of the Itorero (civic education) programme in our district. They have been active in sensitisation campaigns against HIV/AIDS, genocide ideology and conducting adult literacy programmes,” said Muhororo. The MoU’s also seeks to create a legal framework for this cooperation. Ends
