FIFA Secretary General hails Rwanda's progress

International Football Association (FIFA) acting Secretary General, Dr. Markus Kattner has praised the level of development that Rwanda has reached after the tragic 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Dr. Kattner made the remarks on Monday after visiting the Nyamata memorial site in Bugesera District, Eastern province along with Mr. Zelkifli Ngoufonja, Senior Development Manager-Africa, Amira Gaber, Services Director at the Confederation of African Football (CAF), FERWAFA President Vincent Nzamwita, and Vice president Vedaste Kayiranga, among other football officials. The delegation was received by Eastern Province Governor Odette Uwamariya before taking a tour of the center where remains of 45000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi were laid to rest. “I am deeply touched and speechless after seeing and hearing what happened here in Nyamata, and other parts of this country. I hope that people have learnt about the mistakes they did in the past, and that it’s possible to be more respectful to each other in future not only in Rwanda but in the whole world,” said Kattner He added that the progress that Rwanda has made is an example of how things can be solved. Rwanda has demonstrated that they have passed through a lot thanks to the good efforts of President Paul Kagame and the willingness of Rwandans,” added Dr. Kattner. Dr. Kattner was in Rwanda for the just concluded Orange Africa Nations Championships which ended on Sunday at Amahoro stadium with DR Congo emerging the winner after a 3-0 win over Mali in the final. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
