Over 11,000 motorcycle taxi operators in the city have branded their motorcycles with Agaciro Development Fund (AgDF)branded stickers to raise public awareness of the fund. The ceremony to brand the motorcycles took place yesterday after Umuganda in Kimicanga and Nyandungu sites. Celestin Ntaganzwa, the president of Rwanda Federation of Taxi Moto Operators (FERWACOTAMO) said the cyclists can play a big role in raising public awareness because they meet many people every day. “We transport various passengers in different parts of the city and the whole country. Since we have that chance to meet several people, let us use that chance to raise awareness about the fund which is crucial in building our resilience,” he said. “Whoever will see the sticker on a motorcycle will need to know what the message on the sticker means, which will lead people to thinking about what they can contribute to the fund”. Currently, AgDF has over Rwf29 billion, of which Rwf12 million was contributed by motorcyclists across the country. Frank Kagame Kalisa, an accountant at AgDF, said contributing to the fund was building the country’s resilience. “This campaign is to remind every Rwandan about what they can contribute towards the country’s resilience. I hope it will be fruitful as motorcyclists meet many people who are also likely to see the message,” he noted. Agaciro Development Fund is Rwanda’s first sovereign wealth fund that was initiated by Rwandans in 2011 at the 9th Umushyikirano (National Dialogue Council). It was set up to build up public savings to achieve self-reliance, maintain stability in times of shocks to the national economy and accelerate Rwanda’s socio-economic development goals. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
