Chinese in Rwanda start lunar New Year celebrations

A group of 30 artistes from China performed in Kigali on Thursday evening to celebrate the Chinese New Year according to the lunar calendar. The group included acrobats, dancers and singers grouped under the Charming Liaoning Troupe, a Chinese traditional performance group. The event that took place at the University of Rwanda’s College of Education in Kigali, was organised by the Chinese embassy in partnership with Rwanda’s Ministry of Sports and Culture. Amb. (Teddy Kamanzi) The group is on a cultural performance tour in three African countries including Benin, Senegal and Rwanda for the 2016 Chinese New Year celebrations under the invitation of the Chinese embassy in those respective countries. The artistes displayed performances in different arts, including music solos, puppet shows, acrobatic shows, and cultural dances. The well attended show also featured Rwandan performers who performed various cultural songs and dances. Pan Hejun, the ambassador of China to Rwanda, said the event was meant to help strengthen ties between both countries through culture. “China and Rwanda already enjoy a good relationship,” he said. He also wished a happy New Year to all his compatriots as well as Rwandans. The Chinese New Year festival is a 15 day celebration in China that is characterised by massive celebrations. The event has spread to many countries in Asia, including Korea, Japan, Vietnam, among others. This is the third time the event is taking place in Rwanda.
