Mixed fortunes for Kigall city shoppers

Prices for some foodstuff and other commodities have dropped slightly in most markets in Kigali, a survey by Business Times indicates. Plantains (bananas) now cost Rwf200 per kilogramme in various markets across the city, down from Rwf230 last week, while fresh beans cost Rwf450 per kilo, from Rwf500 and Irish potatoes are at Rwf200 compared to Rwf250 last week. A kilo of fresh peas is at Rwf1,200 in Nyabugogo Market, down from Rwf1,300, and mangoes cost Rwf1,200, a drop of Rwf300 from Rwf1,500 the previous week. The price of watermelon (big) dropped by Rwf1,000 to Rwf2,000, down from Rwf3,000 perviously. However, prices of most items are constant with beef ranging from Rwf2,200-Rwf2,400 per kilogramme in city entre and Nyabugogo markets, unchanged from last week. Tomatoes cost Rwf3,000 per basin, onions are at Rwf500 per kilo, carrots cost Rwf400 a kilo, while cabbages range from Rwf250-Rwf400 in most city markets, depending on size, and pumpkins go for Rwf400. Avocado costs Rwf200 each and passion fruits are at Rwf1,400 per kilo in most city markets. A medium-sized pineapple is at Rwf500, while paw paws cost Rwf600 each. A 25-kg bag of maize flour is at between Rwf12, 000 and Rwf13, 000, depending on location, while cassava flour costs between Rwf150 and Rwf200 per kilo. Bread (which weighs 1kg) ranges from Rwf1,000-Rwf2, 000 in Simba Supermarket and up-market stores, depending on the brand, type and size. It goes for Rwf600 to Rwf800 in neighbourhood shops. Milk costs between Rwf350 and Rwf500 per litre. A bar of soap costs between Rwf500 and Rwf600 in most markets and small shops, while sugar ranges from Rwf700 to Rwf800, a five-litre jerrycan of cooking vegetable oil is at between Rwf6,000 and Rwf6,200, rice (from Thailand and Pakistan) costs Rwf850 and Rwf750 per kilogramme, respectively.
