Police on Saturday shot dead one Muhammad Mugemangango, a terror suspect after he attempted to escape by jumping off a Police truck. In a statement, Police said Mugemangango, who was in custody at Kanombe Police Post, had been taken to his home in Kimironko, a Kigali suburb, for a search, as part of investigations. “On the way back, he jumped off the vehicle but he was shot and died in the process. The incident took place on Kimironko-Mushumba Mwiza road,” reads part of the statement. According to Police, Mugemangango, who was deputy Imam at Kimironko mosque, was under investigations for radicalising Rwandan youths to join the Syria-based terror group, Islamic State (ISIS). “Rwanda National Police, acting on information provided by the public, has detected formation of a terror network and we will do our best to unmask the network and deal with culprits in accordance with the law.” The statement, signed by Police spokesperson Celestin Twahirwa, said investigations will continue to establish further details in the case. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
