SACCOs should do everything to safeguard clients money

Editor, RE: “Taking stock of Umurenge savings and credit co-ops” (The New Times, January 19). The initiative of access to finance has shown great importance more especially in remote areas, where many young entrepreneurs and farmers increase their businesses or start ups. But I think it’s about time Umurenge-Saccos started emplying other high technologies like the CCTV cameras, alarms and armed security guards to safeguard people’s monies. Secondly, there is need to train SACCO directors and employees, because new employees and leaders get into office every now and then. This is to help them familiarise with the system, management skills and regulations. About employees who do not submit to the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) the lists of loan defaulters, I think such could be considered as a gross misconduct which may be even immediate grounds for dismissal because it is dangerous to the banking sector as a whole as defaulters will always hide behind.
