A life in the day of .... Dr. Kayibanda Emmanuel

A surgeon Dr. Kayibanda Emmanuel is a surgeon at King Faisal Hospital. He has been in the profession for the last 23 years. By 5.30am I am awake. I first listen to the news on the radio before I think of anything else. At exactly 6, I wake up the kids to prepare for school. Sometimes my wife does this. At 6.15, I go for a shower and by 6.50am, I am eating my breakfast. On my way to work I take the kids to school. The children are ready to go to school and at 7 I driver them to school. I am always at work at 7:30am. The first thing I do when I arrive at the hospital at 7.30 is to check my emails though I rarely have time to reply. Every day I go for a meeting at 7.50am, when those who did the night shift report on the condition of patients. Real work starts at 8.15; I immediately go in the theatre to attend to patients. When I enter into the theatre I do not know what time I will be out. What looks simple may turn out to be a difficult and lengthy procedure. Sometimes I even work on one person for more than 8 hours.This experience is tough, I deal with screaming people. But I am used and have no problem with it. All operations are always on Wednesdays and Thursdays. If its not operation day. I do ward rounds, trying to check on the sick and training medical students. At 10, I am in the office for consultation up to 1pm when I go for lunch. Sometimes there is no time for lunch. If I am in the middle of an operation, I only take a glass of juice. Lunch ends at 2pm and I am back in the theater or office for consultation services. I go home at around 6.30pm. Officially I am supposed to leave work at 5pm but I always visit my patients at the end of the day. At home, I talk to my kids, joke with them and discuss family matters with my wife. At 9.30pm we pray to God and the kids go to bed. I stay in the sitting room with my wife watching TV. Contact: tumnutere2008@yahoo.com
