Rwiza Village, Rwanda's hidden getaway treasure

Within the hills of Kibuye, stands a serene place close to the lakeside with a surrounding that depicts nature’s beauty. As I watch and enjoy the breeze, a methodical sound echoes from water that ripples over the lake’s surface. Looking at the lake in a distance; bare-chested fishermen row into the sunset in small boats, children play in the nearby trees and chirping birds hover into the sky. Overlooking the stunningly beautiful Lake Kivu, Rwiza village qualifies for a perfect getaway spot within Rwanda considering that fact that it hangs on top of a hill and everything within its surrounding is eye catching. That would be just enough for a tourist interested in gazing at nature while inhaling the cool air within from the Lake Kivu. Established 8 years ago, the luxurious feature is only located four kilometres from the town of Kibuye but on a getaway holiday, all routes lead to Rwiza. When Deo Musabyimana, the owner got a plan to setup a place, top of his agenda was to make guests feel at home, using principles for merging beauty and nature. But what exactly makes up this seemingly nice resort? Nine independent cottages, each with self contained facilities. The cottages are fully furnished with different materials and fitted with furniture that is made and designed by local people within Kibuye. Surprisingly, the roofing also comes from local materials whereby the units are thatched with grass that blends with the surrounding landscape. The stunningly beautiful cottages standing on a raised ground facing the lake. There is no need to crave for delicious food while at Rwiza because a restaurant made of two huts is situated among the cottages. In the centre of each heart, a concrete table and sitting area allows a group of more than eight people to share a meal of their choice. Options however remain for those interested in hanging outside the restaurant, as huts and chairs for you to sit and watch over the lake are well positioned. Local and international dishes on the menu The menu is dominated by African dishes that have been imported from neighbouring countries and a few from other countries around the globe. Roasted meat, Chicken based dishes and vegetables stews, among others are part of the menu. But there are other dishes from the continent, Senegalese chicken dishes that go for reasonable prices, spaghetti mixed with beef or goat meat. And an option of full chicken to perfectly suit a big group. Depending on the preference, the chicken could be grilled, mixed with chips, potatoes, and a few soups and salads. “Most dishes can be accommodated and every time a customer orders for something, it can be prepared be it outside our wide menu,” Musabyimana further explains. Despite being a place for attracting mostly tourists, Rwiza village has not left the surrounding community unattended. Development plans and setting up the structures involve participation from local artisans that are hired for a price. Furnishing of the rooms was also done by people from the nearby community involving both men and women. Women make traditional crafts like mats and baskets put on display and most of the food cooked in the restaurant is bought from locals. While majority of the tourists come to Rwiza Village for a ride on the lake, villagers use their boats to take the tourists around and that goes without saying that all are paid in return for the service, something which the owner believes is part of the success. What to do when at Rwiza Village There are a number of fun things to do at Rwiza village depending on your preferences and how much time you have: Despite the size of the rooms being small, there are a few shared areas for hanging out at Rwiza, for example, the bar and restaurant area which have a huge deck with one of the nicest views in Rwanda. One can enjoy such space with a sip at the cold beers. Basking in the sun and relaxing at the shaded tables placed in the opening provide an opportunity for someone in need of sunbathing. Also a fire pit is lit in the evening. Just like any other area located close to the shores, the urge to swim seems unavoidable. The waters at Rwiza are crystal clear for you to lie peacefully and enjoy sounds from nature. Meanwhile, there are nearby islands that can be traversed provided local boat owners are offered some token. This itself contributes greatly to the development of the surrounding areas and lifting the livelihood of people. “Since we do not offer boat rides there are residents and neighbours designated with the role of providing such services. There would be no way to give back to the community but after our guests receive a recommendation they take on the boat rides,” explains Musabyimana. Being a home to a number of rare bird species, the location of Rwiza in Kibuye is an added advantage for bird watchers. At the level of a hike, one can spot rare species of birds. With strategies to make the place more developed, Musabyimana says that upgrading plans are going on and believes that after completion the place will be more appealing to tourists.
