Youth projects get financial support

At least Rwf30 million has been earmarked to support selected youth projects in the City of Kigali districts. The projects were selected from each of the three districts of Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge. The selection was done during the ‘Youth Month’ drive in the City of Kigali that concluded last Friday. Innocent Bayingana, Kigali youth forum representative, said during the Youth Month several projects were evaluated from which the best were recognised. “We evaluated several projects and selected three from each district of the City of Kigali for recognition. At least Rwf30 million will be invested in these projects,” he said. He stressed the importance of the Youth Month, saying it helps harness their efforts. At the closure, youths from different cooperatives exhibited their products. Bayingana said they also committed to implement several projects through performance contracts. “We have committed to paying health insurance for 1000 vulnerable people. We thank the youth from the City of Kigali for their contribution toward the development of the country,” he said. During the closing ceremony, the City of Kigali Mayor, Fidele Ndayisaba, urged the country’s youth to work together for national development. “We count on you for sustainable development of the country. You should be able to spearhead development policies aimed at transforming the country,” Ndayisaba said. The mayor commended the youth for their role in the development of the country. “The future is in your hands. Work to implement what you committed to in your performance contracts.” Ndayisaba also urged the youth to be exemplary and participate in the elections of local leaders slated for next month. Patrick Bizimungu, a member of Twiteze Imbere Rubyiruko Cooperative in Kicukiro District, said joining the cooperative has contributed significantly to his wellbeing. “We work together and share the profits. I would be on the street today or unemployed if it wasn’t for the development programmes the coutry has put in place for the youth but I earn money from my skills,” Bizimungu said. The Youth Month was conducted under the theme “Youth, strive for self–reliance for fast development.” Senderi entertains Kigali youth while closing the youth month. Activities carried out during the campaign include construction and renovation of houses for vulnerable families, as well as training workshops on HIV/AIDS, family planning, drugs abuse, reproductive health and health insurance campaigns. The Youth Month was designed to give the young generation an opportunity to participate in various activities that socially and economically impact the community. Youth month in Kigali city ended with an exhibition. Youth cooperatives exhibit their products during the closure of youth month.
