Rwanda National Police (RNP) has committed more personnel and material resources to ensure smooth and incident-free referendum today, writes Times Reporter. Police spokesperson ACP Celestin Twahirwa said polling centres have been secured, adding that the force had escorted electoral materials to polling stations. They will also provide security to escort the materials back to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) headquarters in Kigali after voting, he said. “We are working jointly with other security organs, NEC, local authorities and other relevant government institutions to ensure the process goes as planned and incident free,” ACP Twahirwa said in a statement yesterday. “We want to reassure the general public that they should go and cast their ballots without fear as the usual secure environment will be maintained,” he added. He urged the public to abide by law during the entire election period. Twahirwa appealed to the public to share information with police timely, especially if anyone experiences or notices anything unusual. “The public should note that this security plan will also cover the entire festive season, CHAN tournament, and the forthcoming elections of local leaders,” he said. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
