Police in Musanze District are holding three top officials of Ruhengeri Hospital over alleged forgery of document and embezzlement of hospital funds worth Rwf14 million. Police said the suspects were arrested last week after an audit carried out by the Ministry of Health found that the trio connived to embezzle funds meant to train workers at health centres and forged documents proving the training took place. The suspects include Dr Deogratias Ndekezi, the hospital director, Joseph Munyaneza, an accountant and Adolphe Ugirashebuja in charge of administration. Chief Inspector of Police, Robert Ngabonziza, the Northern Province regional Police spokesperson said the purported trainees declined to undergo the training from the hospital but their signatures were forged by the administration. Ngabonziza said that the investigations are at the final phase and the suspect’s dossiers will be handed to the prosecution in a few days. Public funds should be managed well and nobody is allowed to misuse them as Police will not relent from apprehending the culprit, Ngabonziza said Forging the documents attract between five to seven years in jail while embezzlement of public funds attract between seven and ten years and fines ranging between two and five times the embezzled funds. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
