Aloys Mbonigaba, a resident of Gatsibo District, on November 29, attempted to bribe a police officer with Rwf100, 000 to release a suspect, but was instead arrested. According to IP Emmanuel Kayigi, Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, it all started when Police in Gatsibo arrested one Felicien Mudende after he was caught red-handed trafficking and selling illicit drugs. “Mbonigaba called the Police commander of Muhura Police station requesting to meet him, but the officer directed him to call another police officer at the station if he had any issue that concerns police,” IP Kayigi explained. “He insisted that he wanted the commander, so they arranged to meet at the police station where Mbonigaba tried to seduce the officer with Rwf100, 000 in order to release Mudende, but he was apprehended in the act after the officer informed his colleagues,” he added. He warned the public against such malpractices, adding that “bribery or corruption has no breeding ground either in Rwanda National Police (RNP) or in the country.” “RNP offers what is duly legal and fights anything illegal, so the public should take that into account and follow the law instead of taking illegal and impossible channels to solve issues.”
