Central bank issues new Rwf1,000 note

The National Bank of Rwanda has introduced a new and improved Rwf1,000 currency note. The new legal tender will be used alongside the old note in circulation, John Rwangombwa, the Governor of the central bank, said in a statement yesterday. The 140X72mm note has a watermark, coat of arms of the Republic of Rwanda and an electrotype element, representing the logo ‘BNR’ below it. The dominant colour of the new bank note is blue. The note’s other features The bank note has the National Museum of Rwanda on the front as the principle design, and a transparent image of number ‘1,000’ below words ‘Iyi Noti Yemewe n’Amategeko’, depending on the disposition of the note. The face value of the note is written horizontally, except on the upper right corner. Still on the front, there is an image of a flying dove changing colour from dark green to blue, depending on the disposition and a bright ring seen on a circular movement. In addition, the serial number of the note is printed horizontally in black in the upper right corner and vertically on the left side. Depending on the disposition of the note, there is a hexagonal picture with an image of a flying dove inside, shifting towards the word ‘BNR’. Invisible fibres scattered on each side of the note are fluorescent under ultraviolent light. The date of issue is 01.05.2015, written between the governor’s signature and the vice-governor’s signature. The wording on the face of the note is in Kinyarwanda (‘Banki Nkuru Y’u Rwanda’, ‘Iyi Noti yemewe N’amategeko’), while that at the back is in English (National Bank of Rwanda, ‘This note is legal tender’ and One Thousand Francs). The main features at the back of the bank note include a golden monkey in the Volcano National Park, whereas the face value of the note written horizontally in all corners of the banknote. The transparent image on the note at the upper right is composed of a reversed number ‘1000’, depending on the disposition of the note. A windowed security thread in which the micro-text reads ‘BNR’ and the number ‘1,000’ that changes colour from red to green, is located at the left side of the note. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
