Mules: The shoes for every occasion

Shoes are accessories that have the power to make or break your outfit. In other words, the wrong pair, even with the most beautiful ensemble, can be a disaster. So, put aside the boots and stilettos and embrace mules, a growing footwear trend today. Mules are backless or sometimes have sling backs, with a heel ranging from small to big, and can be closed or open-toed. They are stylish, comfortable and a pair worth adding to your closet. Mules are versatile; you can wear them with everything from t-shirts and ripped jeans to trousers and a cropped top to maxi skirts or jumpsuits – anything! Anita Iribagiza, a shoe vendor in town, says that there are many ways to make the mule work with your attire. “Medium raised mules look great with skirts, long or short. If you want to highlight your shoes, the best way to do that is by wearing three quarter trousers or leggings,” she says. Iribagiza adds that a pair of mules with black trousers and a simple blouse is fabulous if you are looking to be decent, say for a business meeting or office. For Jeannette Uwera, a student at Mt Kenya University and part-time model, mules enhance your height. “When on the runway, I usually go for high-heeled mules. They are cool, stylish and more comfortable than other shoes. When cat walking, they give you an edge, a sort of boldness that makes it easier to strut without distraction. I feel taller and lighter,” says Uwera. Tips on how to wear mules •Opt for wedge mules, rather than pointed ones; for easier movement. You can pair them with skirts that fall below your knees. •Choose a colour that goes well with the outfit you are wearing. To complete the look, accessorise with a purse or handbag of your preference. •Go for a fairly flat pair of mules if you are wearing jeans; this can work well on a casual day out or even a semi-formal event, like an office party. •Opt for a very wide back strap or those that only show your heels, rather than toes, for easier support. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
