The National Youth Council (NYC) has urged university students to actively contribute to community development activities during the Youth Month slated for November. The call was made during a meeting between student leaders and NYC on Friday, in Kigali, held to encourage university youth to contribute to socio-economic development. Norbert Shyerezo, the NYC coordinator, said the youth were pivotal in transforming and building sustainable development of the country. “The young generation is a major pillar in the development of communities. University students should act as positive mentors to their young brothers and sisters. The Youth Month was organised to give the young generation an opportunity to participate in various activities that socially and economically impact the community,” he said. Shyerezo called on the youth to be creative and innovative. “The creativity and innovation will make you job creators instead of job seekers. Let your knowledge be fruitful to the community during the Youth Month,” he said. Jeannette Umuraza from INILAK Nyanza campus said they were confident of accomplishing their responsibilities during the Youth Month. “The Youth Month is our time to give back to the community. We learn many things by empowering the community,” Umuraza said. Augustin Karangwa, the Association of Rwanda Students Union representative from Kigali Institute of Management, urged students to be role models by participating in community service and bringing change. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
