Dear editor,Female circumcision has been notorious in some parts of Uganda, and even other parts of the world. The news that a community in eastern Uganda has banned the deeply rooted practice of female genital mutilation, gives me hope that women’s rights may be realised. The act of genital mutilation undermines all efforts to gain women’s rights. Young women have had to endure the suffering that normally leads to death or permanent impairment. I therefore congratulate the community leaders for their achievement, and call upon other communities that are still living in the past to stand up and follow the example of the Sebei. NYAGATARE
