We have all witnessed the evolution of fashion, trends coming and going, then making a comeback and so on. After years of other fashion trends, both made their way back and have been on and off since. The pencil skirt is also one of the trends in women that have made a comeback in the world of fashion. They are versatile and can be both casual and corporate. Pencil skirts can be worn with a variety of shoes, tops and accessories. Joyce Simbi, a clothing vendor in Kimisagara, says pencil skirts can be worn by anyone regardless of their body size or age. “Size doesn’t really matter when wearing a pencil skirt; you just need to pick the right one. Plus size women should go for skirts that are long enough to cover the knees. It’s more flattering. “Heels and the right top are ideal to complete the look. And again, when accessorising, go for accessories that match with the colour of the skirt,” she says. Simbi adds that the colour of the skirt also matters depending on the occasion. “Choose calm colours, like cream or beige for a more decent look if going to work. However, for other occasions like parties or simply hanging out with friends, go for any colour, as long as you are comfortable.” Joy Uwimana, designer and owner of Joy Little Boutique at Kigali City Market, says pencil skirts are more than just a fashion statement. “When wearing a pencil skirt, you need to tuck in the shirt or top to highlight your waist. It is a sophisticated and decent look. For those who want their legs to appear a little bit longer, they should opt for raised shoes. You can never go wrong,” says Uwimana. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
