Nyundo students conclude music tour of Canada

A group of nine students from Nyundo School of Music returned home on Sunday after a successful tour of Canada where they performed and visited several music colleges. The students performed at Axis Mundi Harvest, one of the biggest music festivals in Canada. The students who included only two females started the tour on September 16, along with their instructor Jacques Murigande, aka Mighty Popo, the Director of Nyundo School of Music based in Western province. The young Rwandan performers thrilled audiences during their music tour in Canada. According to Murigande, the students had a 3-day performance in Revelstoke in British Colombia, two performances at Selkirk College Nelson, followed by the music camp near Revelstoke, where they mentored high school students. Their last performance was at Douglas College in Vancouver. “We had amazing performances. We also got an opportunity to showcase our traditional culture at Selkirk College where we performed for over 400 people. It was a fine moment to showcase what they studied,” Murigande explained. Erasme Kamayirese, one of the students, said the tour was one of the best experiences he has ever had, and learnt a lot about the music industry. “We toured different places; we attended many music classes on production, vocals, live recording and incidental music, among others. We also got a chance to record our own music. We recorded three songs and one video professionally. We are looking forward to share what we learnt with our colleagues,” he noted. Neema Umutesi, one of the two girls in the delegation, performs in Nelson, British Columbia. During the tour, the young performers impressed the audiences with thrilling, unique sounds from the contemporary music scene in Africa. They also got various skills and knowledge regarding music.
