Commodity prices show mixed trend in Kigali

Food and commodity prices are mixed in most markets across the City of Kigali, a mini-survey by Business Times indicates. A kilogramme of Irish potatoes (Kinigi type) costs up to Rwf380 in different markets across Kigali city, from Rwf300 two weeks ago. The other types of Irish potatoes are at between Rwf290 to Rwf300 in Zinia market from Rwf280 a kilo. Immaculate Mukaneza, a vendor in Zinia Market, attributed the increase to low supplies from Northern Province, the main Irish potato growing area in Rwanda. The price of onions went up marginally by Rwf100 to Rwf1,000 per kilo, from Rwf900. The price of tomatoes rose to Rwf13,000, from Rwf10,000 a basic (measuring unit) previously, while cabbages range from Rwf400 to Rwf500 each, depending on size in Nyabugogo Market. Carrots go for Rwf700 a kilo. The price of passion fruits went up marginally to Rwf1,400 per kilo in most city markets, mangoes cost Rwf1,400 per kilo, while oranges cost between Rwf1,200 and Rwf1,300 per kilo and pine apples range from Rwf400 to Rwf600 each, depending on size and location. A pawpaw costs Rwf500, watermelons are at between Rwf3,000 and Rwf3,300 each, while an apple is at Rwf300. Fresh beans rangesfrom Rwf500 per kilogramme, while Fresh peas are at between Rwf1,200 and Rwf1,400 per kilogramme. A bunch of bananas (plantains) ranges from Rwf6,500 to Rwf8,000, depending on size and a kilo of banana fingers goes for Rwf400 in most markets, while sweet potatoes cost Rwf300 a kilograme. Beef goes for Rwf2,200 per kilogramme in most areas across the city, and it is up to Rwf3,000 in Nakumatt. The price of milk reduced slightly to between Rwf300 and Rwf500 per litre in different city suburbs. A bar of soap ranges from Rwf400 to Rwf600, depending on location or whether one buys from a neighbourhood shop or supermarket, and a five-litre jerrycan of vegetable cooking oil is at Rwf6,500. Bread (weighing 1kg) ranges from Rwf900 to Rwf2,000, depending on the brand, type or size and whether one buys from a supermarket or ordinary shops. Sugar ranges from Rwf700 to Rwf850.
