The menace of thieves has been on the rise in Rwamagana and Kayonza Districts in recent days. Since Tuesday night several thefts and attempted break-ins were reported in different areas in the two districts.According to residents who talked to The New Times yesterday, thieves have stolen several household items, including; electronics, textiles, money and other valuables. Charles Egide Uwiragiye, a businessman in Mukarange Sector, Rwamagana, said last week, thieves broke into his house and stole close to Rwf3 million and household items. “My sitting room is now empty…the TV set, computer, and the music system were all taken. It is discouraging because it cost me time and money to acquire these equipment,” he said. Jacqueline Muhorakeye, a resident of Kigabiro in Rwamagana, said thieves were a big menace to the community. “They don’t only steal household property, but even food stuff from our gardens. Thieves raided my banana plantation and cut down all the bananas that were ready for harvest. They left me with nothing. Police should intervene quickly because development efforts are put to waste by these criminals,” she said. IP Emmanuel Kayigi, the Eastern Region police spokesperson, confirmed that they were aware of these thefts, adding that they would be carrying out patrols in the area. He urged residents to make sure their homes are properly lit at night, and seek neighbourhood help to secure their property in case they are away. “We encourage everyone to be vigilant, especially in reporting potential criminals. Otherwise, the Police continues to ensure everybody’s safety. We commend the people who are working closely with the Police in isolating criminals,” he said.
