I want to start reading books outside the syllabus in order to expand my knowledge. What kind of books should I look out for? ARCHER The books you read outside your narrow academic field can have an unpredictable effect on your practice within it. So much of what you learn is learned sub-consciously. Its effects spread more by infection than by direct injection. The subject matter need not relate directly to what you study at school. Ideas from reading or issues in local or national news can provide conceptual material and enhance your general language competence. This gives you a rich mental yeast which you can use to interact with others, while still retaining your individual take on the texts and the world. Reading can be pure joy if you’re reading a good book. I mean anything that captures your imagination, that compels you to read more, tells you a good story, creates wonderful characters and builds a new world in you. This has to be a habit, that you create and keep for life. It can’t be a matter of just reading a book and then forgetting about reading after the initial burst of enthusiasm for reading. Create and sustain motivation to read more. Extensive reading has a lot to offer. Read great writers, storytellers and people who write with wit, create great characters, reach into your soul, writers who can teach you something. Expand beyond your normal genres. If you normally read one or two genres, break out beyond it. If you only read scientific books or fantasy, read more mainstream literature, read romance or thrillers. Individuals form associative networks among the books they read. Extend, consolidate and sustain vocabulary growth. You will enjoy reading.
