Tomato prices increase by Rwf4,000 in city markets

The price of tomatoes has increased by Rwf4,000 to Rwf10,000 per basin in various city markets, from Rwf6,000 a week ago. Philbert Niyigena, a tomato vendor in Nyabugogo Market, attributed the increase to low supply from tomato growing areas. He added that the prices have been going up over the past few weeks. The price of bananas was Rwf20 up, from Rwf220 per kilogramme to Rwf240 in Kimironko Market, while that of Irish potatoes rose to Rwf240, from Rwf220 last week. Fresh peas cost Rwf1,500 per kilogramme, an increase of Rwf200 from Rwf1,300 previously. Divine Mutangana, a vendor in Zinia Market, said prices of fruits have also increased, with the price of oranges now at between Rwf1,300 and Rwf1,500 per kilogramme, that of mangoes ranges from Rwf1,400 to Rwf1,600 per kilogramme, while passion fruits cost up to Rwf1,700 a kilo. The rice from Pakistan costs between Rwf800 and Rwf900 a kilo, while that from Thailand ranges from Rwf1,000 to Rwf1,200 per kilogramme. Avocado is at between Rwf100 and Rwf200 (depending on size), carrots cost Rwf600 per kilogramme, salt goes for Rwf400, while cassava flour ranges from Rwf350 to Rwf500 per kilo. The price of beef was unchanged, at between Rwf2,400 and Rwf2,700 a kilo in Kimironko, Remera and city centre markets, and goes for Rwf2,500 in Batsinda and Gakinjiro markets. Fresh beans range from Rwf400 to Rwf600 per kilo, maize flour costs between Rwf500 and Rwf700 per kilogramme, while onions cost Rwf600 a kilo. Red paper ranges from Rwf2,200 to Rwf2,400 per kilo and sweet potatoes go for Rwf250 per kilogramme, with cassava at Rwf250. A bag of charcoal ranges from Rwf7,500 to Rwf9,000, while cabbage ranges from Rwf400 to Rwf600, depending on their size. Milk costs between Rwf450-Rwf600 per litre in most areas in Kigali City. And bread is unchanged, at Rwf600 (half a kilo) and Rwf1,000 (for that weighing a likogramme) in ordinary shops, but it costs between Rwf1,100 and Rwf2,000 in supermarkets like Nakummat and Simba.
