Police at Rwezamenyo in Nyarugenge District are holding a 17-year-old student who stabbed a teacher at College St. Andre in Nyamirambo - Kigali City suburb. Jean Baptiste Gasoma, a Chemistry teacher was admitted at the University Teaching Hospital (CHUK) with serious cuts on the head and arm. Theobald Hategekimana, the hospital’s director, told The New Times last evening that the patient was under treatment. “He sustained cuts on the head and arm; medics are giving him all the necessary attention. Hopefully, by tomorrow (today) we would be able to give medicinal report. But I would say all will be well,” Hategekimana said. The suspect (names withheld because she is a minor)—a day-scholar, is believed to have entered school gates on Tuesday morning carrying a machete in her school bag, and went straight to search for the teacher. The cause of yesterday’s incident is yet to be established, according to Superintendent Modeste Mbabazi, Police spokesperson for the Central region. But some sources said they believed the incident happened in a row over marks. Efforts to get a comment from the administration were futile as the school was announced out-of-bounds for security reasons. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
