EASTERN PROVINCE BUGESERA – Teachers are losing interest in their jobs, Headmistress of Murama Catch-Up school Ancilla Mrwaka has warned.While inaugurating a three-room academic building, built by World Vision, Mrwaka said that, due to issues including salary, teachers were increasingly jaded by their work and went to school “when they feel like it.”“The teachers’ morale has been killed by the failure of the government to pay their salary arrears for six months,” she said to a visiting delegation of NGO workers and district officials.The headmistress said several attempts to convince teachers to work had fallen on deaf ears, and that the teachers kept according more of their time to other activities to supplement their income. A number of organisations have donated text books to the school but a visit to the library suggests they are rarely used; coated with dusty in empty rooms.Bookshelves were build recently in the school, but most literature is still in boxes on the floor. Murama is a government primary school established in 2005 to accommodate children who were formerly involved in child labor in the district.
