Police sensitise taxi-moto operators in anti-crime drive

Police have rallied taxi-moto operators to join a crime prevention drive in a bid to ensure public safety. On Saturday, the awareness campaign conducted in various districts of the country, focused on traffic rules. In the Southern Province, close to 2000 taxi-moto operators attended meetings held in the different districts. While speaking to over 600 taxi-moto operators in Huye District, DPC Superintendent Jules Rutayisire warned against facilitating criminality by transporting wrongdoers or illicit goods. “One way to abide by traffic rules is to ensure that motorcyclists carry one passenger at a time, own a driver’s licence, insurance, wear a helmet and a reflector jacket,” Supt. Rutayisire told the motorcyclists. “In case one suspects either a colleague or a passenger of being involved in a crime, they should report to the Police immediately because ensuring safety and security is everybody’s responsibility,” he added. In Muhanga District, Police pledged to meet Abdullah Nshimiyimana’s costs to acquire a driver’s licence. Nshimiyimana had passed all the theory and practical driving tests but failed to get money to register and process his licence. Similar meetings were held in all Western Province districts and drew close to 1000 taxi-moto operators. The Western region Police spokesperson, Theobald Kanamugire, said Police focused its sensitisation campaign on road safety and crime prevention. In the Eastern Province, during the meetings, Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police Spokesperson for the Eastern region warned attendants against speeding to avoid road accidents. Police say recklessness is among the major causes of road accidents and a number of taxi-moto operators have often been arrested for either aiding or conducting criminal and illegal activities. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
