Editor, RE: “Why we must strive for effective communication, language competence” (The New Times, July 31). I thank Oscar Kimanuka for a well-written, well-thought-out, thought-provoking article. The usage of our language needs to always be at the forefront. This might sound impossible but there are Rwandan graduates from American universities who cannot compose an email in Kinyarwanda. Yes it is good they go to university to learn all these ways of communication but who are they mainly going to communicate with in their daily life? This is why the use of our mother-tongue, which is the language of heart and mind, in which the first reason and judgment is expressed, needs to be given a second thought. Desire
