Kwibuka 21: Tigo's Donation Tour highlights need for businesses to support survivors

This year’s 100 days of commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis saw Tigo Rwanda staff launch a donation tour to intensify their support to survivors through various corporate social responsibility activities across all regions of Rwanda. The tour included various donations based on the needs indicated by grassroots authorities. Tigo staff and management kicked off their CSR activities in Ngoma Sector of Huye District by donating 210 iron sheets to 7 families of the genocide survivors. Tongai Maramba, Chief Executive Officer, Tigo Rwanda, stated that their initiative was aligned well with the Rwandan government’s policies to promote economic self-reliance. He said, “Tigo believes that, apart from raising the general welfare of the population, support for the education and health sectors can be used to build a productive and efficient workforce. ”While a team of 30 staff led by CEO Maramba donated 300 mutuelle cards to the most needy in the Kayonza district, he said that they were committed to contributing to the betterment of lives of Rwandans. “The best way to bring about social change is to provide the right implements to people who are needy but also passionate and have the zeal to sustain themselves and their families for the long term,” Maramba added. Tigo staff then visited a genocide survivors’ community where they donated 3 cows to Urumuri rw’Ubuzima Family Association (URFA) in Muhoza sector in Musanze District. The association is comprised of 60 members, most of them widows and orphans of the 1994 Genocide. In the same spirit, Tigo travelled to Bumbogo sector, Gasabo district to donate and interact with some of the survivor families of the victims of the 1994 genocide. They paid homage to the remains of 682 victims of the killings and laid wreaths on the mass grave at Nkuuzuzu Memorial site. They also donated four cows to the survivors. The Executive Secretary of Bumbogo Sector, Alfred Nduwayezu appreciated Tigo for its continued commitment and role in the development of the country through, supporting the survivors and its numerous other initiatives.
