Minister urges Diaspora students uphold Rwandan values

Rwandan students in the Diaspora have been urged to uphold Rwandan values and strive for the dignity of the country. Dr Papias Musafiri Malimba, the Minister for Education, delivered the message, Tuesday, while officially opening the eighth edition of the Diaspora Civic Education (Itorero), named “Indangamirwa VIII.” The three- week training runs from July 12 through August 2 at RDF Combat Training Centre-Gabiro in Gatsibo District. The training brings together 184 students from 34 countries, including 74 girls and 110 boys. Dr Musafiri said the students will be judged by their works after the training. “Itorero is helpful because it inculcates Rwandan values in the young generation. During civic education, students acquire much more than the usual knowledge. This is also a great opportunity for the students to learn about governance and the country’s vision,” he said. “The contribution of the youth is essential for Rwanda’s development. Education is key to the development of the country, but education without national values never counts,” he added. He noted that students in the Diaspora are expected to serve as Rwanda’s ambassadors abroad. “You are the mirrors of the country. You should potray a good image of our country. Rwanda is waiting for your contribution after school,” the minister said. He urged the students to embrace patriotism, unity, hard-work and self-reliance. ‘‘You hold the key to national cohesion due to the influence you wield in the community,’’ he added. During the training, the students will learn about the Rwandan history, values among others. Darlene Ineza, 18, one of the students, said the training would help them understand the country’s vision and their role in its development. Collins Ntwari, another trainee, said they were eager learn about the country’s history and patriotism. Musafiri added that everyone has to love their country and fight for its dignity. The students are being trained by a group of 90 members of the Diaspora who trained as instructors. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
