NORTHERN PROVINCE GICUMBI — Farmers in Gicumbi District have begun extensive wheat farming. An evaluation revealed during a meeting of district officials has shown that in Bwisige Sector alone 67 hectares of land has already been prepared for wheat out of the targeted 100 hectares. The assessment made during a meeting, chaired by the Mayor, Bonane Nyangezi also revealed that Mukarange Sector has prepared 65 hectares of wheat farms out of their target of growing wheat on 120 hectares and Rubaya Sector has prepared 60 hectares in addition to other wheat farms already in place. The meeting held on Wednesday brought together Sector Executive Secretaries of the 21 Sectors of Gicumbi District, Sector officials in charge of social affairs and Sector agronomists among others. Most executive secretaries said farmers had embraced wheat farming this rain season. Other sectors had also started the wheat growing campaign, with all executive Secretaries promising to complete the wheat planting by October 20 2008. Mayor Nyangezi called upon the Sector leaders to continue sensitising farmers on the need to increase wheat production as agreed in a previous meeting with farmers’ cooperatives. During the previous meeting, Nyangezi urged Sector leaders to sensitise farmers in each sector to grow wheat on at least 100 hectares this season because there is a ready market provided by Pembe Wheat Factory.
