Editor, Refer to Allan Brian Ssenyonga’s article, “This is not the time to test the Rwandan spirit” (The New Times, June 28). Unfortunately, this is the reality of neo-colonialism. Our real and deep nationalist sentiments have little effect on a global power like the United Kingdom; neither does the African Union communiqué. I dont think the UK or other western powers take Africa seriously; we have no real economic, military, scientific, or political power—at least not until regional integration (read African Unity) enables us to grow in global influence. It is good to remain steadfast amidst such imperialistic provocation, but let’s not confuse our nationalist sentiments with any real influence. More of this will happen in the future, and not only towards Rwanda—the real test is to see how Africa can strategically build its global influence by making tough choices today like ceding some of our petty sovereignty in place of real regional and continental unity. The struggle continues. Kagenza SR
