BY GODFREY NTAGUNGIRA EASTERN PROVINCE NYAGATARE: Police, in a joint operation with army and local defence forces, netted over 600 suspected idlers Wednesday in Nyagatare and Tabagwe Sectors. The suspects were charged of being idle and disorderly. A senior security official who took part in the crackdown said that Nyagatare had become a safe haven for people fleeing from Gacaca proceedings and other crimes committed in their home districts. During the operation, prostitutes were also arrested and Kanyanga, a banned local gin, impounded. The New Times established that 80 per cent of the suspects identified themselves as residents of western and southern provinces. The District Police Commander Superintendent Emmanuel Kalasi said that crime has been on the increase, especially defilement and rape.
