EDITORIAL: Ramadan Mubarak! May unity, peace reign

The Holy Month of Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, is on for the next 39 days. During the 40 days of fasting, Muslims will reflect on their creed and attest to the virtues of obedience and generosity. Whereas the Holy Month of Islam is a Muslim affair, Christians or even non-believers cannot entirely say they are not part of it. In one way or the other, we find ourselves entwined together because of the cardinal social rule that requires us all not to segregate against anyone, but rather live together harmoniously. The Mufti of Rwanda, Sheikh Ibrahim Kayitare, has urged Muslims to be humble during their observance of the fast, lookout for those in need, and reconcile among themselves and with society at large. This is not an isolated message. Nor is it intended for Muslims only. It concerns everyone, believers and non-believers alike. When unity reigns in a country it benefits everyone, regardless of their beliefs. Similarly, we can look up to the tenets of fasting to glean a few lessons for our personal and collective prosperity. The 40 days of fast call for patience, discipline and compassion. During this period of fasting, those behind terror campaigns in different parts of the world, in most cases espoused by religious fanatics including Islamic fundamentalists, should change their ways, denounce violence and seek to live in peace with their neighbours. In Rwanda, Muslims, just like any other resident, enjoy freedom of workshop and the faith of Islam has been woven into the country’s fabric, a complete departure from the Rwanda of yesteryears in which Muslims were openly segregated against. It is in the same spirit that the government last month recognised the Islam day of Eid el-Fitr as a public holiday. This is a testament that like the many Christmas calendar days unite the country, Islam continues to play its role too. To those observing this holy month, Ramadan Mubarak!
