Olympian Robert Kajuga won gold in the men’s 10,000m to mark a fantastic return to the long distance event yesterday at the Kwibuka Genocide Memorial Meet at Amahoro Stadium. The 30-year-old, who returned from a career threatening injury that he attained at the 2013 World Athletics Championships in Russia, put on a good show at last month’s Kigali International Peace Marathon, but yesterday’s performance saw him finish a cool 39 seconds ahead of second-placed John Hakizimana of New Athletics Stars (NAS) club. “I am impressed with my performance because to finish ahead of everyone else in my first 10,000m race in four years is emotional for me,” said the contented Kajuga, despite his time being two minutes behind his personal best, 27:52 that he ran at the London 2012 Olympics where he finished 14th. In the men’s 5000m, APR’s Eric Sebahire (14:22:25) walked away with the gold medal beating Primier Manirafasha of Kamonyi by 28 seconds as APR’s God Rutayisire finished third after clocking 14:52:02. APR’s duo of Salome Nyirarukundo (33:45:29) and Vivine Niragire (38:06:05) bagged gold and silver medals in the women’s 10,000m, an event where they were the only participants after Jeanne d’Arc Mukakigeri pulled out after just 3000 meters.
