An extraordinary cabinet meeting on Thursday approved three presidential nominees to the Supreme Court. They are Alphonse Munyamfura Ngagi, Aimé Muyoboke Karimunda and Agnes Murorunkwere Nyirandabaruta. The nominations are subject to Senate approval. Currently, there are 14 judges in the Supreme Court, besides Chief Justice Prof Sam Rugege and his deputy Zainab Sylvie Kayitesi. Ngagi is a senior lecturer in the faculty of law at the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), University of Rwanda in Huye, while Karimunda has been the advisor to the Deputy Chief Justice, he is also the author of the book ‘The Death Penalty in Africa, Murorunkwere has been the inspector of courts. Such presidential nominations are decided upon in consultation with the High Council of the Judiciary. Xavier Ndahayo was nominated as High Court vice president. If approved by the Senate, he will replace Nyirandabaruta. Meanwhile the cabinet added three more public holidays onto the national calendar. They are January 2, the National Harvest Day (Umuganura) on August 1 and Eid al-Adha.
