China celebrates 59th anniversary

•Ties strengthenedThe Chinese Embassy in Kigali Tuesday celebrated the 59th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. Highlighting examples of good mutual cooperation initiatives between the two countries, the Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda, Sun Shuzhong, and Rwanda’s Minister in charge of Information, Louise Mushikiwabo, said that the celebration of the Chinese National Day in Kigali was also an occasion to express appreciation for the ‘excellent relations’ between the two countries. “China attaches importance to bilateral ties with Rwanda. I take great pleasure in noting that the relationship between China and Rwanda has grown significantly since the Beijing Summit of China-Africa Cooperation Forum. We are here tonight to honor this strong relationship,” said Ambassador Sun Shuzhong. He said that the two countries had many successes in their joint efforts in the political, economic, cultural and educational spheres. He particularly appreciated Rwanda’s support when its President, Paul Kagame, sent a message of condolence to China accompanied by a contribution of US$ 50,000 to the country’s relief efforts in this year’s devastating earthquake in Wenchuan that caused grave loss of life and property. The two envoys underscored mutual support between the two countries in international relations, Rwanda supporting China’s cause of peaceful reunification according to Sun Shuzhong, and China endorsing Rwanda’s efforts in safeguarding peace and security in the Great Lakes region. “In the international arena, we appreciate China’s determination in strengthening solidarity and cooperation with African countries demonstrated by regular exchanges of views, coordination of positions on major international and regional issues and standing for mutual support on major stakes concerning state sovereignty, territorial integrity and national dignity,” said Minister Mushikiwabo, reading a message from the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Rosemary Museminali. The Chinese government since 1994 supports Rwanda in areas of Health, Education Capacity building, infrastructure development and agricultural technology. Mushikiwabo called for continuous solidarity between Rwanda and China as she explained that it benefits both countries’ citizens. “The people and government of Rwanda appreciate this solidarity and support which we hope will continue to grow for the mutual benefit of our peoples,” she said. The People’s Republic of China was founded on September 30, 1949. Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and top political adviser, Jia Qinglin, also celebrated the 59th anniversary in China on Tuesday with more than 1,000 officials from within the country and abroad. The ceremony in Kigali attracted several Rwandan government officials, members of diplomatic corps, the United Nations personnel and journalists, among others. Ends
