Two men in Kayonza District have been arrested for allegedly attempting to lure a police officer into releasing three suspects with a bribe worth Rwf200, 000. The suspects, Silas Mugiraneza and Josiane Mukatetero, reportedly approached the officer and asked him to release the three individuals, who had been previously arrested over illicit drug related crimes. The Police Spokesperson for Eastern Province, Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, said the officer immediately reported the matter to his superiors and the suspects were arrested in red-handed. “The two suspects called the officer and asked him to meet so that they could discuss something important. But when he approached them, they offered him Rwf200,000 and told him that they wanted the three individuals in question released. They were immediately arrested since the officer had already reported the crime,” IP Kayigi said. “Their arrest should not come as a surprise because RNP officers are expected to be professional and disciplined as they endeavour to carry out their duties. ‘‘It is through such discipline that the public will continue to trust us with their safety and security.” He called upon Rwandans to desist from corruption and bribery acts. Kayigi also reminded the general public to desist from illegal activities and to partner with Police through Community Policing, by providing timely information on any suspicious activities that may threaten security in society. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
