Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA) has completed a two-day elementary cricket coaching course for 20 teachers in Kayonza District, Eastern Province from April 25-26. The aim of the training to offer the basic understanding of the game for the teachers from 10 schools and the University of Rwanda-Rukara campus, who were recently introduced to the game of cricket by regional cricket development officer Jackson Nzayisenga. “Whilst active participation was witnessed amongst the participants, a lot more will be expected of them individually as they begin to transfer the cricket skills they learnt on to the students in their schools,” mentioned Nzayisenga. The teachers were also taught how to incorporate peace and HIV/AIDS messages while coaching cricket. These messages are aimed at creating healthy living amongst players and their communities. RCA general manager, Joshua Mwanja said, “With the continued development of the sport in Rwanda, such courses can work for the betterment of the game as a whole.” Mwanja said in a bid to spread the game to other parts of Rwanda, many programs to introduce cricket in schools and universities in the whole country have been put in place. Through these programs RCA hopes to train over 80 teachers that will help promote the game in the schools. International umpire Emmanuel Byiringiro was also present to teach them the basics of umpiring.
