EASTERN PROVINCE NYAGATARE — District authorities in Nyagatare have announced plans to introduce mandatory insurance on all properties that pose high risk to life. The move comes days after fire gutted a commercial building in the town centre. The District Mayor, Robert Kashemeza Wednesday committed to start mass mobilisation aimed to convince landlords to insure their buildings against fire and other calamities. Land lords in Nyagatare are apparently reluctant to insure their property. Kashemeza noted that such reluctance could hinder the district’s development plan if left unchecked. “But the last fire incident to one of the houses in town was an eye opener to us all,” he said. He urged the insurance industry to ensure that the risk insurances are made available to the likely customers and be delivered as soon as possible. “It will be good news for hundreds of landlords and firm owners to insure their commercial activities,” he added. Last month, the owner of the burnt building, Arias Ngoga attributed the fire on excess power supply by electrogaz. But the head of Electrogaz Station in Nyagatare, Clement Nkurunziza refuted the claims, saying that the power supply to his house was the stated 220 voltage. Ends
