French city of Nantes pays tribute to Genocide victims

The Embassy of Rwanda in France on Saturday joined the Rwandan community in Nantes and Subiruseke, a locally based association composed of French and Rwandan nationals, to pay tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. At the occasion, around fifty participants gathered at Pont Anne de Bretagne and laid a wreath in La Loire River in honour and solidarity with lives lost during the Genocide. The Embassy’s First Secretary Yves Muneza, who represented the ambassador; Martine Rondeau, chairperson of Subiruseke, and Amelie Schafer Mutarabayire, President Founder of the association paid tribute to the genocide victims. They all expressed their commitment to remembrance and mobilising more strength so that Genocide does not happen again anywhere in the world. Rondeau, Mutarabayire and Esperance Brossard, founder and president of Ibuka -France highlighted the importance of memorial sites and endeavors to work with the municipality to get a place in the city of Nantes that can accommodate a memorial site. A candle lighting moment and a debate with the theme ‘Talking genocide trauma’ by Marie Audile Godard and Mutarabayire were held at Nantes Municipality’s hall. About 50 people, including Rwandans, survivors, friends of Rwanda and members of the French civil society turned up in solidarity to remember Genocide victims. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
