An open chess tournament which will decide players that qualify for two upcoming international events is set to start on May 1. It will be played in three days. Rwanda Chess Federation (Ferwade) vice president Kevin Ganza says the tournament will be a first step towards choosing representatives to the Commonwealth Chess Championship to be held on June 22 – 30, in New Delhi – India. The tournament will also determine who will represent Rwanda at the third ‘Rencontres Internationales des Echecs Francophones’, an annual French speaking nations’ chess event set for July 17 – 26 in Montreal, Canada. Apart from winning games during the local open tournament, the number of participants in the upcoming international events will also depend on availability of funds. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
