Editor, I would like to react to the letter, “Language is about culture, meaning and understanding” (The New Times, April 9) Mr. Karimi was spot on! What if Rwanda turned into the world interpreter par excellence? Because of our history, one finds Rwandans living in all corners of the planet. Many among us have lived and worked for several years in other linguistic spheres. We are fluent, some have even become teachers of and in all those foreign languages. Now some of us have come back to live in Rwanda, others regularly travel and temporarily reside here. Indeed, in addition to our common mother tongue, Kinyarwanda, here in Rwanda we communicate in English, French, and many other African and world languages. No foreigner will ever get lost here, there always will be some Rwandan somewhere to interpret and translate everything. Another immensely rich capital asset, waiting to be tapped into, to actualise and develop further, thus putting it to contribution for the benefit of all Rwandans and of anyone else interested in the world.
