Rwandan peacekeepers in Darfur commemorate

Rwandan Peacekeepers serving under the United Nations African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), Rwandan community in Sudan together with friends and other peacekeepers, Tuesday commemorated the 21st anniversary of Genocide against the Tutsi. The event was held at El Fasher, North Darfur. Rwanda Chargé d’Affaires in Sudan Ismail Shyaka Kajugiro, who spoke on behalf of Rwandan community, told participants that the Genocide was preventable. “The international community just failed to halt the Genocide and ignored prior warnings,” Shyaka said. He stressed that the last phase of all genocides is denial by perpetrators and supporters. “The denial of the Genocide is being done by some scholars, politicians as well as the international media,” he said. The UNAMID Deputy Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Balla Keita, who represented the UNAMID leadership, commended Rwandans for re-building their country following the Genocide. He also expressed empathy on what happened in Rwanda. The commemoration started with a three-kilometre “Walk to Remember”, from El Fasher Super Camp (UNAMID headquarters) to the Agriculture Research Cooperation Town Hall, where Rwandan community were joined by friends from other contingents and UNAMID staff. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
