Coca Cola volleyball league Champions Men-APR (Frw 500,000) Women-UNR (Frw 500,000) APR comfortably defended their volleyball crown after a comprehensive straight sets (3-0) victory over arch-rivals Kigali Volleyball Club in the final phase of the Coca Cola league. Jean Luc Ndayikengurukiye’s men who entered the final phase with a five-point deficit worked their way to a superb victory after an all-round team effort masterminded by their key attacker Lawrence Yakan. The league title was Ndayikengurukiye’s first as coach and left a big smile on his face. “I think after dominating the championship, we clearly deserved to win today,” he told Times Sport. “The team deserves a lot of credit from the fans because they played well and consistently throughout the championship,” he added. At the end of the day, APR received a trophy and a cash package of Frw 0.5m. KVC pocketed Frw 0.3m while 2006 champions National University of Rwanda (UNR) finished third to bag Frw 0.2m. In the ladies’ fray, UNR edged APEDI Rwaza to the title by 25 points after a 4th spot finish in the final phase. APEDI finished fifth. UNR bagged Frw 0.5m, APEDI pocketed Frw 0.3m while Groupe Scolaire de Rwaza who won the final phase walked away with Frw 0.2m. The closing ceremony was graced by the minister of Sports and Culture Joseph Habineza, the ministry’s Secretary General Jean Pierre Karabaranga and Bralirwa’s commercial director Alexander Koch. The league was sponsored by Bralirwa under their Coca-Cola brand. Ends
