Two arrested over theft of mining equipment

Police in Kigali have arrested two people in connection with theft of equipment valued at $8, 000 (about Rwf 5.5 million) from Roco mining company. The equipment, which include metal bars and a laptop, were stolen from the company site in Ruriba Cell, Kigali Sector in Nyarugenge District on Sunday night. The metals were being used to support machines used to break rocks. The thieves allegedly broke into the store and stole the items. Police said they acted after a tip-off from the company managers. “Two people, both employees of the firm, have since been arrested but investigations are still ongoing,” Supt. Modeste Mbabazi, Police spokesperson for the Central region, said. “The way the theft was orchestrated shows that the criminals had a key to the store. They opened the store, took what was inside and closed it again. The two suspects could have had a hand, but investigations are ongoing to ensure that all those responsible are arrested,” he added. He appealed to anyone with information that may help in these investigations to come forward “in the usual community policing spirit.” He further appealed to the public to work closely with the Police to fight crime by reporting criminals and incidents on time. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
